You’ve got a mind-blowing picture, surround sound, and streaming content set up, but it wasn’t cheap. Heal your wallet with ten upgrades, fixes, and setup tips that take your system to 11 on the cheap.

10. Hide away your discs in style

Not everybody wants their CD or DVD collection to be a proud, visible part of their living room. And a lot of people have had old-school, giant-box speakers shoved in their garages, or offered up constantly by parents, aunts, uncles, or anyone else with a formerly hi-fi system. One Instructables user put some old gear to good use by converting it to media cabinets made from broken speakers. A single speaker may solve your surround-sound problems

I’d like to know if wireless speakers are a good option for a surround sound system. Based on other articles I’ve read, I suspect the technology isn’t there yet, but I thought I’d ask. We currently have a four-speaker system with two speakers “stacked” on each side of the entertainment system, but obviously this isn’t ideal.

Wireless HDMI solution from Gefen

Cords and wires are the bane of any
technophile’s existence. They are a pain to set up and inevitably form
an unruly tangle that’s just plain messy. The introduction of HDMI went
a long way to reducing the unsightly clutter running from behind the
lounge room AV set up by combining high definition sound and video in
one convenient cable. But now connectivity solutions company Gefen has
gone one step further with their Wireless for HDMI Extender, which
comprises a local sender unit which is paired to a receiver unit at a
remote location.

BEST FOR: SURROUND SOUND

PIONEER LX01 £1,300

Despite having no centre speaker and just four tiny satellites plus the sub,
the LX01 sounds impressive. Two drivers in each front speaker emulate the
centre speaker, providing clear movie dialogue. The upscaling DVD drive
gives a crisp image and records and plays almost all disc formats. There’s a
250GB hard-disk and a Freeview tuner, and HD audio is handled when you run a
Blu-ray player through one of three HDMI sockets.

Verdict:The very best all-in-one home cinema
